An Overview of the Toyota RAV4

Toyota introduced the RAV4 in 1996, giving drivers a vehicle that combined the ruggedness of an SUV with the handling and fuel economy of a sedan. The RAV4 was an instant hit with students who loved its styling and capabilities, commuters who enjoyed its fuel economy and high ground clearance, and parents who loved its cabin space and attention to safety. The first generation gave drivers the choice of a two- or four-door model, with either front- or all-wheel drive.

Interestingly, the name RAV4 means “Recreational Active Vehicle with Four-Wheel Drive,” even though the model has rarely had this feature. For those who don’t know, four-wheel drive involves the use of a transfer case to deliver horsepower to each wheel separately; this is different from all-wheel drive, which gives torque to both of the vehicle’s axles. In general, four-wheel drive provides better off-road traction, while all-wheel drive gives you better traction in inclement weather conditions when driving on paved surfaces.

When it introduced the second-generation RAV4 in 2001, Toyota discontinued the two-door model, opting for a standard two-row model. Nevertheless, it continued one of the most distinctive features of the RAV4, a full-size spare tire mounted on the vehicle’s tailgate; this was ended during the third generation, which was released in 2006. New generations followed, with the fourth generation introduced in 2013 and the fifth generation starting with the 2019 model year.

Over the years, Toyota continuously improved the appearance of the RAV4, moving from a boxy look in the '90s to a smooth, aggressive, and aerodynamic appearance in the current version. The brand has also made sure to add the latest safety and connectivity features on the RAV4, keeping this model on the cutting edge of auto tech. The Toyota Safety Sense suite of driver assistance features helps you and your passengers get wherever you are going in your RAV4 safely, while the Toyota Audio Multimedia suite will have you entertained and connected as you travel.

The RAV4 has always featured an efficient I-4 gas engine with different displacements and output. Regardless of performance differences, it has always had exceptional fuel economy, which helps you save money every time you fill the tank. With this in mind, Toyota added two variants to the RAV4 lineup to deliver even better fuel efficiency: the RAV4 Hybrid was introduced in 2017, followed in 2021 by the RAV4 Prime, a plug-in hybrid.

Both combine a four-cylinder gas engine with a pair of electric motors, one for each axle; this gives the RAV4 Hybrid and Prime models all-wheel drive as standard. The electric motors are powered by a battery cell in the RAV4’s lower frame. The Hybrid model uses the gas engine to keep the battery recharged through a generator, while the Prime adds the convenience of a plug-in feature so you keep the battery recharged either at home or via a public DC Fast Charging station.
